Fundamental Skills for Managers - Boot Camp

Johannesburg 14, 15 & 16 September 2011

To be a brilliant manager, you need certain core skills.

In this 3 day management “bootcamp”, you will learn the necessary fundamentals that you need to manage your staff effectively.

The Wikipedia definition of management is that “Management in all business areas and organizational activities are the acts of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives efficiently and effectively.” In other words, management is about getting results out of people.

To get the desired results a manager needs to 1) employ the right people; 2) have the best possible strategies with which to get the best out of those people; 3) Know how to retain top performers and 4) Know the Law.

So you will learn how to::

1.    Recruit the Right people, for the Right reason, at the Right time, for the Right money and for the Right Job – 95% of management headaches disappear if you get this right

  • How to define the type of person you need for the job
  • How to effectively brief an employment agency
  • Criteria for short-listing
  • How to structure an interview so that you stay within the Law and get the information that you require
  • How to question (legally) and listen effectively
  • How to make the right decision as to whom to employ

2.    Measure and give feedback to your staff on their productivity at regular intervals – keep your staff productive all the time

  • How to construct and implement an effective productivity management tool.
  • Develop a “productivity consciousness” amongst your employees.
  • Engage you employees regarding productivity issues in a motivational manner.

The benefits:

  • Make the manager’s job easier
  • Have more productive staff, and thereby a more profitable company
  • Catch mistakes as they are made and not when it is too late
  • Happier, more confident and productive managers and staff

3.    Have a strategy to retain performers – Everyone wants performers. Learn how to hang on to yours

  • Learn how to create a culture of talent recognition and retention
  • Learn how your “good ones”  view reward
  • Learn how to create an environment that attracts and retains talent
  • Learn how to identify and manage your “good ones”
  • Learn that talent retention does not work when HR are doing it.
  • Like productivity management, talent retention is the task of the manager

4.    Know the law – the majority of cases lost by employers at the CCMA, are lost on procedural grounds. It’s the responsibility of every manager to have an intimate understanding of the law relating to the discipline and dismissal of staff. This is not an HR responsibility, but rather a management one!
