This workshop is aimed at those who would like to gain more confidence when speaking English. Although this is a short course, the knowledge gained will form a solid foundation on which to continue building. Those who have a strong desire to improve in this area will benefit most from the workshop.
With English accepted as the language of business and therefore of communication across our global world, the ability to speak and pronounce the language correctly is essential. The main aim of this course is to give all learners the skills and so the confidence to communicate more effectively in spoken English.
Learners will be given a knowledge foundation of the verbal aspects of English, which when applied daily, will ensure that they are easily understood. Focus is placed on keeping spoken English as simple as possible.
During the workshop attention is not only given to problems with pronunciation, but also with body language and accents.
Delegates will learn:
-
An understanding of the relationship between Voice and Speech.
-
An awareness of how factors such as posture, emotions, nervousness and moods influence our voices and so our ability to get our message across to the listener.
-
The importance of articulation and pronunciation of individual words.
-
About the importance of speaking slowly so that important words are not assimilated, thus making them meaningless.
-
Learners will be made aware of the pronunciations of vowels and their importance for clear verbal communication
-
The neutral vowel and see which common words fall into this group.
-
Awareness of the importance of articulation
-
How, unlike many other languages, English has to be correctly enunciated for clarity; each word must be pronounced individually and not be allowed to ‘run into the next one’
-
Learners will be exposed to examples of good spoken English which will confirm that as a verbal language it has a natural rhythm that is easy to listen to and absorb.
This workshop will give delegates a unique view of how English should be utilized verbally to inform rather than confuse. The emphasis will be placed upon the necessity for simple, concise language rather than long-winded speeches that go nowhere.
While the course does not aim to force delegates to speak the “Queen’s English”, individuals need to be made aware of situations whereby poor pronunciation causes confusion and misunderstanding and results in poor self-esteem and a lack of confidence.
Methodology
This workshop requires a large degree of oral learner participation. Skills are practiced on a continual basis throughout the days of training. Extensive use of sound equipment will be made so that delegates can hear themselves. As this is a practical course, there will be a great deal of role-playing and group sessions.
