Mark is passionate about productivity in people. His main philosophy is not at all unusual. In fact it is verbalised fairly often by different people – happy workers are productive workers. So Mark’s concern is this – South Africa is one of the least productive countries in the world, so by inference we have an unhappy workforce.
If this is so, then the question is “why do we have an unhappy / unproductive workforce?” Mark believes that it stems mostly from flawed selection processes, and badly selected and inadequately prepared managers.
During the mid 80’s Mark started Merit Business Institute, a company that teaches managers how to create an environment in which their staff WANT to perform. Merit Business Institute has gone from strength to strength and now numbers amongst its clients some of South Africa’s biggest and smallest companies.
The overriding philosophy that Mark brings to the table is that we as managers should be managing the achievement of the responsibilities that people working for us have, and not managing their tasks for them.
Mark has consulted to major corporations in South Africa, including Bytes Technology Group, First Rand Bank, Rand Merchant Bank Properties, Nampak, Lafarge, Isuzu Truck South Africa, regarding the productive management of staff.
Mark is married, has two grown children, and is an avid deep-sea and bass fisherman.
