In the 16 odd years that we have been teaching on the subject of leadership, we have seen an evolution in the recruiting practices of companies in that, more and more they are looking for people with good leadership skills. This trend has been very encouraging. However, somewhere after these people with good leadership skills have been employed and more than likely appointed to management, we get to work with their staff. This is where we hear what is going on, and in the majority of instances, the leadership qualities for which the individual was employed are not the qualities being exhibited to the staff. So, I thought it might be a good idea to revisit some of the qualities of a REAL leader. Those qualities that cause his or her staff to perform because they want to and not because they have to. Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand – John C Maxwell – Good leaders are people that other people like to be around. They are people that have a genuine caring and regard for others. They have their ego under control, and exhibit a great deal of humility. They realise and act upon the fact that the team is more important than the captain. Good leaders are unselfish and never draw praise or attention to themselves. They deflect all praise and attention to their team. They are people who show a great deal of compassion while being extremely self- disciplined. Good leaders lead by example first, and then teach the “how to’s”.
Good leadership is based
on trust Good leaders understand that their words and their deeds have to line up. That what they say is what they do. Not only that, but they also understand that their words and their deeds have to line up with their belief’s. It’s no good when leaders go out there and say and do things that they don’t believe in. Good leaders have integrity! Good leaders also understand the importance of being reliable. Too often leaders concentrate on meeting requests from senior management on time, and yet they seem to not worry about letting their own staff down. When leaders let their staff down, even in the smallest and seemingly insignificant things, they are inflicting irreparable damage on themselves as leaders! Good leaders don’t talk out of turn and participate in gossip. Good leaders don’t make it obvious who their favourite people are. Good leaders are fair!
Good leaders develop
other leaders You can look at these qualities and think, “why do I need to employ people with these qualities?” The answer is very simple. Companies that have happy workers make more profit! It’s a fact! Check it out! And after all, is that not why we’re in business?
