A PERSONAL PROFILE OF MARK DEAVALL

Mark Deavall grew up business wise, in the life insurance industry. Here, while busy working out pension funds and tax relief programs with client companies, he noticed that, although there were managers, they were managing processes. No-one was actually managing people - until someone needed to be severely disciplined! The result was dictatorial and disempowering managers, and unhappy workers.

Mark believes that if we as managers pay as much attention to the emotional, intellectual and physical well-being of our staff as we do to the well-being of our balance sheet and cash-flow, we will have very profitable businesses. Happy workers are productive and profitable workers.

As a result of these observations and beliefs, during the mid 80’s Mark started Merit Business Institute, a company that teaches managers how to create an environment in which their staff WANT to perform. Merit Business Institute has gone from strength to strength and now numbers amongst its clients some of South Africa’s biggest and smallest companies.

In February 2007, and in response to the market asking for short, to-the-point information seminars, Mark started The Learning Café. The goal of The Learning Café is to provide “edutainment” – Education, Information and Entertainment, on topics that are applicable to what’s going on right now!

Mark has consulted to major corporations in South Africa, including Bytes Technology Group, First Rand Bank, Rand Merchant Bank Properties and Nampak, on various aspects including Recruitment, People Management and Mentoring, Time Management, Negotiation Strategies, Selling Skills, Strategic Planning, Restructuring and Performance Management.

Mark is married, has two grown children, and is an avid deep-sea and bass fisherman.

Feedback from Gauteng North Chamber of Commerce and Industry

On different occasions Mark Deavall has been invited by GNCCI, to do short talks at their member meetings

"It is a rare occasion when you meet somebody that you instantly know that will make a big impact on any audience, and that have the skills and knowledge to convey a message that is not only understood, but also reach out and touch you as a person.

We had the pleasure to meet this special kind of person at our network function yesterday. He was the guest speaker, and therefore I am taking the liberty to endorse Mark Deavall of Merit Business Institute to our members, as I believe that, should you attend his seminars, or contract him to assist in your business within the scope of his experience, that a positive result will be the bottom line."
